OVERVIEW:
Despite an uncertain international economic backdrop, $1.3 billion of private equity was invested in Latin America during the first half of 2009, according to the just released Venture Equity Latin America’s 2009 Mid-Year Report.
The amount invested compares to the $1.7 billion during the first half of 2008, and the $2.3 billion during the first half of 2007. The report documents 29 deals, up from 26 recorded in the first half of 2008. Ten are in Brazil, five are in Mexico and the others are spread out throughout the region. Financial services and alternative energy were the strongest draw for investors and fundraising. Another hot sector was education, particularly in Brazil.
Fundraising during this half year was roughly $2.2 billion, a 16% increase over the $1.9 billion raised in the first half of 2008. If the latter half of 2009 keeps up this pace, it is poised to generate higher fundraising than Latin America has seen in years.
